Adding a search link to the online Cambridge Dictionary in your Moodle

A number of people have asked me how to add a search 'block' for the Online Cambridge Dictionary, as you can see here:

Here's how to do it:
  1. Turn on editing in the page that you want to add the dictionary search
  2. add an HTML block
  3. click on the Configuration link (the hand) at the top of the new HTML block
  4. Click on the 'Toggle HTML Source' button, the one that looks like this < >
  5. then read these instructions: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/linktous.asp
  6. the above code works, but I would suggest 3 changes:
    1. add a line break at the top of the code <br>, in order to make the editing symbols visible - if you don't do this the CUP logo will hide the symbols and you'll not be able to edit the block
    2. add target="_blank" to the link to the CUP dictionary site to make the link open in a new window
    3. add target="_blank" to the search link, so that the search results also appear in a new window
  7. If you're not sure about making the above 3 changes yourself, I have attached a text file that includes the changes. Just copy and paste that code into your HTML block. You'll see the text to the top-right of this message.
Note, that with newer versions of Moodle, I think 1.7 and above, there is a sticky block feature, which allows admins to make blocks of their choice appear on every course page. In this way, you could make the CUP search block appear on every course page.
