Past Tense vs Past Continuous use for duration in the past

Hi,
I have learned that both Past Tense and Past Continuous Tense can be used for a past activity that went on for a period of time in the past and is finished.
Are they used interchangeably and have the same meaning?
If not, how to distinguish them?

Please Help.
Thanks !
I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
